Arua Municipality is located 560 km from Kampala, the Ugandan capital city on the north western part bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo. The main socio-economic activities in Arua Municipality comprise commercial activities in the central Business district (CBD). In Arua Municipality, 25% of the population is dependent on petty and informal business and cottage industry: 10% in formal employment (i.e. those employed by government and organizations) and the remaining 65% of the population depends on family support and other miscellaneous activities. Given its central location as the administrative and economic seat of West Nile, Arua Municipality has the potential to grow into a tourist centre and plans are underway to build an eco-city - one of whose components is ecotourism. This project aims to help the people of the municipality to exploit this opportunity by tapping into the virgin area of craft making as a way of raising income for individuals and the local government through taxes, as well as showcasing Arua to the world.
