Jhonatan Daniel Melendez: Local available materials – Guatemala

Addressing the housing deficit in Guatemala is not a material or technology that can be applied uniformly everywhere, but the process of evaluating and studying each community and consequently finding the best materials and construction methods that approach the local resources and people’s skills. Therefore, the goal of this project is to build social homes with interlocking bricks made of recycled plastic. This technology was first developed in Colombia by the Architect Oscar Andres Mendez and has proved to be a low cost and resistant material. In this way, the best solution to address the housing deficit in Guatemala is not a material or technology that can be applied uniformly everywhere, but the process of evaluating and studying each community and consequently finding the best materials and construction methods that approach the local resources and people’s skills. The timeframe and relevant stakeholders to this project would be the same as in the previous case.
